Fort Daniel Elementary School was established in August of 1994 with 940 students. The school is located in the Hog Mountain community in northeastern Gwinnett County and is situated on 21.17 acres of land. The school was named for a military fort that stood nearby in the early 1800s as a protection for white settlers against Indians along the frontier. The original fort was named for General Alan Daniel.

In 1998 the school experienced growth and nine additional classrooms were added. By 1999, the school served 1,580 students, housing them in the building and in 28 portable classrooms.

The community was rezoned in 1999 when a new elementary school, Freeman’s Mill, opened nearby. By 2002–03 the enrollment had grown to 1,618, and the school had 29 portable classrooms. Rezoning of the Fort Daniel Elementary student population occurred again in 2003 when two new elementary schools, Ivy Creek and Duncan Creek, were established. As Gwinnett County has continued to grow, so has this school community.

As the 2008-09 school year came to a close, many of Fort Daniel’s students were rezoned to attend Freeman’s Mill Elementary School. The anticipated enrollment for the

2009-10 school year saw Fort Daniel become the smallest it had ever been with 675 students and no portable classrooms.

Fort Daniel Elementary School is part of the Mill Creek School Cluster, which includes: Duncan Creek Elementary, Harmony Elementary, Ivy Creek Elementary, Puckett’s Mill Elementary, Jones Middle School, Osborne Middle School and Mill Creek High School.

Dr. Barbara Tucker was appointed Principal in 2019 and Fort Daniel’s motto of “Learners and Leaders Every Day” continued…Fort Daniel was recognized as a 2019 “Greatest Gains” school, receiving the Gold Award from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. Fort Daniel was also recognized as a 2019 Green and Healthy School. Fort Daniel continues to stay focused on teaching, learning and community!
